Description:
A great deal of the appeal of Fairhaven is the historic buildings and unique, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. There are no chain stores here, nor are there any fast food places -- so common in other parts of town. However, there is an obvious need for a quick and convenient locale to get burgers, fries and shakes, and Win’s Drive-in fulfills this niche well.

Win’s does not conform to the traditional design of the drive-in with covered stalls and plexi-glass menus. It is in all other respects the classic, small-town, independent burger joint. There are two small windows outside the building for customers to order from when weather permits. Interestingly enough, one is solely dedicated to the sale of Lotto and scratch lottery tickets. It isn’t uncommon for a line to form at the window when the jackpot rises. The interior is exactly what you would expect -- booths lining the wall from the front counter to the back room. Although there were quite a few paintings of Native American scenes and Bellingham, past and present, I was most impressed with the stained-glass representation of a hamburger, shake and fries by the front door.

One thing is certain: The menu does not disappoint those that appreciate fast food. Everything that can be deep fried or grilled is offered, from chili burgers, hamburgers, fishwiches and chickenwiches, to onion rings and corn dogs. The fact that I did not try the mysteriously named “yummy burger” haunts me to this day. A wide selection of milkshakes and malts cements Win’s as an upholder of the traditional Americana cuisine. I personally recommend the black raspberry shake, made with real fruit and ice cream. You ain’t going to find that at McDonald’s now, are you?

Hi My dad owned Chuckanut Motors in 1965. This was the building with the round roof located at 12th and Harris in Fairhaven that now houses Bobs Burger and Brew. At that time the property where Wins Inn is pre sently at was just an empty lot and my dad used to store cars there that he was going to work in his body shop at Chuckanut Motors At that Time a woman named Winnie (I dont know her last name) owned a restauraunt in the big brick building just to the North of the empty lot. She served great food and I used to go there for lunch with my dad when I was helping him during the summer months in his body shop Winnie sold or closed down the restauraunt in the brick building and had Wins' Inn Drive In built about that time (1965to1970?) She ran it for many years and served "Super Deluxe" hamburgers which had to be the biggest and the bestes hamburger in Whatcom county :). If you want to know more about the southside in those from what I remember please let me know. Thanks. Rob Fayette
